PE piping system for the fire protection of the Metro depots

Dubai is booming. In 2008, already two million people have been living on an area comprising not more than 4,000 km², and this development won’t stop regarding the yearly population growth of about 8 %. For the enormous space problem in this country, compare this: In Austria are currently eight million inhabitants living on an area that is 20 times bigger than Dubai. Whereas the big construction projects don’t seem to come to an end, the infrastructure has not been adapted to the growing demand so far.

From 2006 to 2009, an unprecedented project in the Middle East is in preparation that will eliminate going by car as sole possibility for being Dubai’s 76 km, fully-automatic metro system. The increasing traffic, mainly caused by business as well as tourism and also the burden of pollution have been solved by September 9th, 2009. Then, the first 52 km of the „Red Line“ - a metro that goes partly underground, partly on elevated viaducts - has been finished.

The security within the Metro depots will be ensured by a fire protection system that is equipped with AGRU pipes made out of polyethylene (PE).

The piping system was delivered by AGRU’s sales partner BMC Gulf, who received an order from the subcontractor Build Force. Additionally, BMC Gulf was asked to supply the appropriate welding machines and to take care of the project supervision at the construction site.

Fully automated CNC machines with data recording from WIDOS were selected. For the installation certified welders (acc. to DVGW standard GW 330) from the SKZ Training Centre UAE were employed.

AGRU’s PE piping system will supply the depots with water for fire fighting. In these stations, all trains are parked when they are not in use or maintained. Only FM 1613 listed piping components class 175 from AGRU have been applied, which guarantees high quality and safety. Furthermore, the many advantages of PE compared to other materials resulted in the selection of a FM listed PE plastic system:
